CAREERS CONFERENCE 2014 Postponed for Retooling
April 17, 2013 – Madison, WI – The Careers Conference will be
taking a year off for the first time in its 27-year history, in order to retool
its program to meet the new demands of the twenty-first century. Sponsored by The
Center on Education and Work in University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of
Education, the Careers Conference is a premier national event in the field of
career development and education for work.
Designed for educators and
practitioners at all educational levels, the Careers Conference presents
learning opportunities that range from an introduction to career development
theory to the very latest in advanced practices. The Center on Education and
Work is still planning to host its Careers Conference in 2015.
“We are disappointed that we will
not be able to offer a Careers Conference in 2014, but canceling next year’s
event allows us time to retool and reenergize so that can find better ways to
help careers professionals tackle the significant challenges they face in the
complicated and ever-changing jobs environment of the twenty-first century,” said
Mitchell Nathan, Director of the Center on Education and Work.
This year’s conference had been
planned for Feb. 24 to 26, 2014 at the Concourse Hotel & Governor’s Club in
Madison, Wis. In past years, the Careers Conference had taken place over
two-and-a-half days and was designed to give professional development experts
the tools they needed to lead students into rewarding careers and get
unemployed professionals back to work. Last year, the Careers Conference
offered pre-conference workshops, more than 120 practitioner sessions, off-site
tours to workplaces, hands-on technology workshops, and networking
opportunities.
“We have always taken pride in
how we’ve been able to put together a program that provided best practices,
strategies, and programs to address issues pertinent to every level of career
development professional serving audiences from K-12 through adult,” said Conference
Director and CEW Senior Outreach Specialist Carol Edds. “From
increasing student engagement in secondary school, to reaping the benefits of a
college education, to crafting a competitive resume once inside the workforce,
to maximizing employment opportunities in any economy, those efforts won’t end,
they’re just going to be refocused into different mediums that are better
tailored to our core constituencies.”
