2008 Strategic Planning Seminar

Effective Engagement and Retention: Using Theory,
Research, and Practice to Keep Students in STEM Degrees

Angela Byars-Winston, Ph.D., Director
Sloan Project for Diversity in STEM Retention

A great deal of national attention has been given to retaining racial and ethnic minority and White women students in the sciences and engineering. Although retention research exists on these underrepresented student groups, many STEM program administrators and faculty have fragmented knowledge of this research and how to use it to create empirically-supported retention practices. The purpose of this seminar is to provide participants with current critical review of important retention research on underrepresented science and engineering students and support their development of a retention agenda for interventions and research that advance evidence-based practice in this area.

Seminar Outcomes:

Teams of Faculty and Student Affairs Leaders will leave the Seminar with:
  • An overview of current research and theory on college student retention and engagement in STEM
  • A detailed overview of a new STEM mentoring model, its development, and retention outcomes
  • An action plan for implementing retention interventions on their campus and collecting data on effectiveness
  • Access to a network of STEM leadership teams developing effective student retention programs

Who Should Attend?

This seminar is targeted toward higher education professionals (e.g., staff, faculty, administrators) interested in and responsible for recruiting and retaining underrepresented science and engineering students. Because the focus is on understanding retention research and advancing higher education retention efforts, participants are encouraged to attend in teams assembled from their colleges and universities. There are no pre-requisites. A maximum of 50 participants will be registered to attend this seminar.
